The Last Shoemakers of Doon Valley

On 7 March between 1600 and 1900, PhD researcher and Group member LOKesh Ghai is hosting an international premiere of his film, The Last Shoemakers of Doon Valley, in the SODA cinema on the Manchester Metropolitan University campus. The film is a celebration of the resilient community of shoemakers of the Doon Valley in northern India. Shoemaking involves understanding the anatomy of the foot and translating creative ideas of footwear design with attention to comfort, the nature of materials, and the needs of daily life and work. While exploring people’s love for hand-crafted shoes, the film raises the question: for how long will these shoemakers be able to continue their craft against the odds of mass production, fast fashion, caste discrimination and recent leather politics in India
